Juniper Squamata

four feet tall

After styling.

This tree will need to be styled into pads that grow nearer each other

Juniper forest

This group had lost its way

after styling

The trees were slanted and reset to give a more dynamic image

An old Pine

overgrown and without definition

Styled in a demo

I wanted to retain the slant but elevated it slightly

An old Juniper

This had grown out of its shape

After

I removed the rest of the tree and stated with a seven image. The tre is also slanting but does not show that in the image

After styling

This was a workshop tree

Paperbarks

After styling

The owner, Dianne Berkout, had collected these trees and helped me place them on a large slab

Garden centre material

I styled a number of Junipers for a large Pentsai slab planting.

They were all different sizes

Before

After

a very small juniper

I needed different sizes

after

five inches tall

after

yet another

after styling

completed arrangment

Its four feet long. I built up the side to for a cliff and planted the smallest tree on top to give perspective

An old pine

This was previously styled by a visiting master but had grown out somewhat

After styling

I defined the branches and reset the tree in the pot at a better angle.

This is the front

The tree now has more definition. The nebari is better placed and the branches are much nicer. About three hours.

Trident Maple before

I thought this needed a refinement as the trees were not placed as well as they could be.

After styling

The owner, Ric, worked with me to create an image that gave more perspective and depth to this lovely group.

Don Deluca brought a large slab

In this masterclass workshop, Don was asked to remove all the trees to allow me to reset the trees in a different and more dynamic position

After

I set the trees, all of them, in a position that brought the slab into the image rather than as a pot. The space gives great depth and the slant gives a windswept appearance.

after planting and rough styling

A workshop group

Although very slender, we managed to style these into a literati group

A masterclass workshop

We created a huge Ficus forrest from nursery stock. I think there were over 60 trees in this group. I called it Ficus buggurd herniatus

Part of a twin tree styling demo

Reiner Goebel and I worked on a large presentation in New Zealand. The trees were very difficult. Reiner helped me reduce the mass then I worked on the detailed foliage styling as he explained the material, style and techniques.

After

The long branches had tiny foliage areas. After removing most of the bigger branches, I managed to get each small foliage mass into a shape and then added some dead wood to create a much older image. I did the other tree next day in a workshop.

Penstai group

I created this image in Brisbane from raw material. Not huge but I wanted to get the feeling of a Chinese mountain scape

Workshops in Brisbane

The artist had created a tremendously realistic landscape with rocks and enamel colours. We placed the trees after styling them. I loved this art work.

Raw material Juniper Squamata. I asked the participants to wire everything then I styled these trees for them.

Juniper Squamata

Bushes actually but now detailed wiring and styling creates a tree image

Workshop group in Perth WA

The owner Dianne worked with me to create this atractive group from pot grown native melaluecas

. Elegant and low, it has a very realistic look. Dianne is a very talented bonsai artist from Perth Western Australia and now President of the her Bonsai Society.
