Forest Plantings

-this is some archive material

Reflections of an island forest
Ulmus(Elm) Forest
When I was first in Italy during 1995 I gave a series of Workshops on Forests, as this is a particular speciality of mine. This was what I put together for one of the participants at that time. To give you an idea of the size, the slate is resting on a normal size door. The next picture shows the planting two years later.

The same Forest in 1997 two years later. It was chosen as one of the best in show along with the next Forest at the very first all Italian National Bonsai Convention in Imola during 1999.

The other Forest I put together for the owner was this Acer Campestre, Field Maple. Resting on another door.

Two years later it has developed into a magnificent Yosue also. It helps when the material is excellent and the growers know what to do after I have helped them achieve the result.

This was a group I created in 1995 from Cedrus(Cedar) Libani and Atlantica Glauca. The organisers, Eugenio Zardi and Carmello Romano stand on either side. The base was created by Eugenio. Carmello and Eugenio belong to the Imola Bonsai Society near Bologna. I do not think it's a Shohin! Groups of this size are great for club shows and attract a lot of attention. I should point out that making these large plantings involve the assistance of a number of people to complete the group in a reasonable time or the audience will fall asleep no matter how badly I sing during the creation!

The Imola Bonsai Society have been looking after the Yosue and two years later, during another workshop I refined the planting. This year I completed the form of the larger group as can be seen in this photograph. The smaller group will work out over the following two years

This picture shows some of the detail of my Yosue.

At this years major Convention in Italy I created another large group by special demand. Helped by members from a number of clubs.
This was the base slab made out of Cement Fondue, chicken wire and Fibreglass.

This is the material. Cedrus Atlantica in all sizes. I ordered exactly what I wanted last year and they delivered exactly that! A sign of a truly great club.

Within three hours and the help of 8 assistants, the group made a group. You can see my pre sketch on the wall behind.

The completed group of over 45 trees.

Large South African veldt forest Craig created at one of the South African conventions. The owner, Rob Clausen, a very fine Bonsai Artist, made the huge pot. This is Rob standing beside it. Rob is featured in my book Bonsai Masterclass

Craig's very first forest, created in 1984 for the first Federation of British Bonsai Societies convention in Nottingham, pictured one year after creating from nursery stock. 5' high. Group initially put together by John Naka, Peter Adams, Don MacNeil and Craig Coussins during John Nakas first UK tour

Larch group Three feet long and three feet high. Grown from 10 to 15 year old trees. 1989. More detailed pictures and about the making of this group is fully covered in my books.

Cryptomeria group on 12' slab. This was created for the 2000 Federation of British Bonsai Societies Convention

At the Florida Convention I created this twin slab group of Azaleas. Each slab is five feet long. Click for a larger image. It represents the windswept images from the Florida coastline.
