Important note about this website

The reason why there are other quite different items on this website is
that when displaying a scroll in a Tokonoma-or special scroll area, you
would display that scroll with an object such as
a Bonsai or a small item like a Vase, Ikebana, Statue, Antique Pot, a rare
Tea Cup, Incense Burner, Bulb bowl, Suiban, Singing Bowl or Suiseki.

I hope that you will enjoy browsing the pages of Tokonoma scrolls and
perhaps find out a little more about the beautiful world of Japanese and
Chinese art a world that I have been immersed
in for most of my life.

to learn about Japanese and Chinese Scroll Painters

Scroll restoration service

Please note that we are booked three months in advance
at this time

A full restoration is done with silk mounts. We use the existing scroll ends and silk tape if these are in situ. Otherwise we completely redo everything. If you want a box for the scroll we make that as well.
Here are some prices.

A full restoration can cost between £95 and £190 ( $150-$300)
depending on what you want.

Replacing both the top and bottom panels is £70 ($95),

The centre panel border in silk can also be replaced for £60 ($95)

New ends can be in dense Padouk wood and that is £30 ($48)
or in antique Bone, £45. ($70)

A new box made and covered in vintage Kimono silk is £40. ($65)up to 28 inches. Over that size will be £65 ($95)

All prices include postage in the UK and Plus £20 ($35USD) anywhere else

If the painting is badly damaged , creased or stained, I would need to quote on that. However, most creases can easily be flattened and tears are backed with new material. Large holes may be an issue but we can get round that. See the Scrolls In Restoration for some beautiful examples of our restoration ability. However we can not make damaged scrolls look new and any restoration is only dependant on what is doable.

If you want the artist translated that cost is £15 to £25 ($25-$40) depending on work -long poems translated or simple signature and seal- which is what we are charged by the specialist scroll translator.

Please note that we are booked three months in advance at this time.

All prices include postage in the UK and Plus £20 ($35USD) anywhere else

Welcome to my collection of wonderful Antique Scrolls, Suiseki and Antique Accent Items' for display in your Tokonoma or special place at home, exhibition of Bonsai, in your home or your office. I only sell genuine items and hand painted antique scrolls  and do not sell coloured photocopies or fakes. These exquisite works of art are a superb investment to give great pleasure and be appreciated by yourself and your family. Its safe to say that there are scrolls for every subject and every person. Long, medium or short scrolls, for the home, office, Bonsai Display or Teahouse. Of course the website is called Tokonoma Scrolls and this refers to the Tokonoma or display area seen in many Japanese and Japanese themed homes. The great majority of the scrolls here are rare and outstanding antique Scrolls but I have also brought together some superb modern scrolls of the latter part of the 20th century because  think that these artists are quite wonderful. Many have become eagerly collected as their work has become appreciated. Some scrolls have been lovingly restored and some former scroll paintings that have lost the original scroll have been researched and put back onto silk mounts that reflect the beauty of the artists work during the period the artist was working.  Tokonoma scrolls employ only the very best restorers and we are proud to have the expertise and professionalism  of a third generation Scroll Mounting Master to work on our scrolls. However, saying this we also offer many original scrolls that have not been touched or restored as these are in excellent condition and a number of these come with their original tomobako (signed storage box) which is signed & sealed by the respective artist. Some of these scrolls are Sumi. In the Japanese painting tradition, sumi-e (ink painting) has often been regarded as the highest test of an artist’s skills. The artist must have the technical skill to control the brush (yohitsu) and control the delicate balance between the water and carefully prepared ink (yoboku). The strength of the brush stroke must do more than replicate or render the subject- it must embody its vitality and essence as well. As Henry P. Bowie wrote so succinctly in 1911: ‘Colors can cheat the eye but sumi never can; it proclaims the master and exposes the tyro.’ (On The Laws of Japanese Painting, p. 39
