Trevs Pine©

Trevor Smith frequently helps me when I have some styling to do. Trevor has worked with me for many years and is a fine Bonsai artist in his own right. Based in Blackpool he is one of England's up and coming young Masters. Trevor is seen in some of my books where we have worked together on various projects. Today Trevor brought along an interesting little pine. With a very old trunk, this pine had grown long leggy branches which seemed to die off and then new ones grew from the very old trunk. This happens in nature where the tree is in dense undergrowth and can not get up enough steam to develop beyond the first stages. It had been a good tree at some stage but the undergrowth around it had stopped further development until Trevor collected this.

We used Petflex to stop the branches from splitting or breaking when bent. We have used copper wire for all the styling as it is stringer for this kind of extreme bending work.

Before After.
The tree will take its shape over a year and back buds will be allowed to develop in the areas that we have not wrapped. When the Petflex is removed next year then back buds will start to pop up all over the branches. However, we should probably start to inarch graft at that stage as well so that we remove some of the octopus's shaped branches. However, when the tree is fully developed you would probably not actually see any of that. However, Trev will have  to tidy the interior up at that stage.
