Craig Coussins Demo Tree
Victoria Bonsai Society Feb 2006

Victoria has some great Bonsai Artists . Their collections , many of which are Yamadori, show their scale of ability and a lot of care has been taken in the establishment and development of these Bonsai. Therefore it was with great pleasure to run a workshop and, because of their abilities,  I was able to  push the participants very hard in our all day workshop. Some great trees were made. The first tree that you see belongs to the President, George Heffelfinger who was not too happy about losing the top of the tree but with some coercion and a slap around the ear, he made the right choice.  In the case of these Canadian Bonsai Artists I was coaching rather than teaching. That is a really nice way to approach a group of good bonsai artists.

In coaching artists I explain how I look at styling a Bonsai. The way I do Bonsai is to work around the tree and try to make the tree look nice all the way round. Yes there may well be a front but equally there may be more than one front. You may see some of that in other demos on this website. I came into Bonsai to make  little  trees and that requires understanding of trees in nature. Hence I take camera into the forest and mountain ranges of the worlds and discover what my teacher tells me. My teacher is of course nature.

Before my demo we had another workshop for novices and everyone came away with some very nice Bonsai, due in part to the excellent material  that they were offered. All the senior artists who attended that second workshop assisted me  in delivering the help and guidance to the novice artists.

AFTERCARE: Spray three times  a day for  at least six weeks  to  keep the humidity levels up (like a giant cutting) and water  to keep the soil damp. Please note that if this regime is NOT kept up then some of the finer growing wired tips will dry out and the tree will check .

Don't feed for six weeks  and then half strength high nitrogen every two weeks to assist in bud growth. Read my books to learn about feeding and watering regimes.

Dear Craig,
Thank you once again for your magnificent lecture and demonstration to the Akron - Canton Bonsai Society.
Ohio is considered the “heartland” of the USA, traditional middle America.
Unlike folks on the east and west coasts, Ohioans in general have heard little and know less about bonsai and penjing.

Your lecture and demo were great!  You explained the history and techniques in ways that everyone could understand.
Your humor really helped to set folks at ease while you prepared a wonderful group planting of Shimpaku junipers.
You stimulated a number of people to join our club, former members to renew their membership, and we’re beginning to give classes for beginners.
Your appearance was a real shot in the arm for popularizing bonsai in our region.
Warmest regards,
Bob Heath
President, ACBS
